Once again, Pope John Paul II is teaching the world how to suffer. His stated intent is to point people towards the suffering Christ. Eventually, much like Cardinal Bernadin, John Paul will teach us how to die well. Please offer prayers to the Lord on behalf of our brother.

you know, i was really touched by mikey's prayer for the Pope last night. i must confess, however, that I've never prayed for the Pope before. of course, he's never been sick like this. regardless, there was this gut reaction in me (eminating from my evangelical upbringing) last night that said "no, you shouldn't be praying for the Pope. we're not Catholic." I realized how insidious this notion was/is. and then I realized that there are probably millions and millions of protestants out there who would never consider praying for the Pope, because they don't see him as being part of the same faith as they are.

i'm continually amazed at the lies that creep into out minds and cause us to divide and separate our faith. i continue to uncover these lies in my own life, and once identified i realize how un-Christlike and un-Godly they are. i think these little lies like this one and others (e.g. we must stop gay marriage and abortion in order to faithfully serve God) are probably a lot like what Peter thought when he tried to rebuke the Lord and tell Him He wasn't supposed to die.

unless we throw away these pre-conceived notions and agendas, we won't ever be able to lose our life so that we may find it.
