welcome to Oklahoma!

where cowpie throwing contests and civil war reenactments are verbotten, but cockfighting is still legal. did we tell you about our 3.2% beer? the state legislature has long said it is non-intoxicating.

altogether y'all, let's hear it: "you're doin' fine Oklahoma, Oklahoma, O-K-L-A-H-O-M-A, Oklahoma, OK!"

in the interests of full disclosure...

in 2002 the people of oklahoma voted to ban cockfighting. however, the law was poorly written, punishing only those who 'own' cocks, not those who fight them or participate in such sordid affairs.

also, in 1995 the legislature of oklahoma ended the non-intoxicating charade by renaming 3.2% brew, low-point beer.

Oh, the South still lives in certain parts of New England, to be sure. North Reading, MA, used to have "cowchip poker" to raise money for the high school. For those of you that don't know what this is: a grid with columns of numbers and rows of letters is laid out on the football field and two cows are allowed to wander the field while people place bets on which square their *ahem * chip is going to fall on. They would play this weird music with mooing in the background and sell burgers and ribs on a grill. Sort of ironic when you think about it... -krista
